Redesigning a Complex Software Application
Marriott International was migrating a revenue management planning tool from a client/server technology to the web. Their existing internal applications development group desired to create a web-based user interface that was more usable and systematic than previous user interface projects, and additionally would establish some foundational user interface standards for the internal applications group. Leadership from the Marriott.com group recommended Matter for the project.
Matter worked quickly to understand the existing tool’s role within the organization, how the tool functioned, and the desired user experience the Marriott organization sought to achieve. This was accomplished using a series of quick workshops and facilitated sessions with key stakeholders and developers of the system.
We then created a new information architecture and visual design system to reorganize the existing user process flows and screen layouts, and updated the look of the application to be aligned with Marriott brand standards. This information architecture and visual design was then documented in the form of a styleguide, complete with development specifications and screen templates.
Marriott was able to immediately put the new style guide to use and quickly began user interface coding and implementation for the new application. The development team was able to extend the styleguide work to new, subsequently identified screens and functions .
Moreover, Matter’s documentation created the capacity in another initiative’s development group to extend the styles to a different but related application, reusing some of the underlying code and making the two applications consistent where previously they had been very different in look and feel.
This work led to a larger engagement to redesign the enterprise reservations application used by Marriott agents in their call centers.
